Paved Sawyers Bar Road to Campsite at mile 1615.98

Back on the trail toward Oregon.

I took two days off the trail to try to let my ankles recover a bit. They have been bothering me and getting progressively more painful. Rested them and iced them and soaked in Epsom salts. We shall see.

Started the day off at the junction of the PCT and Sawyer's Bar Road, a twisty paved road that leads to Etna, where I stayed for a couple nights.

If you ever find yourself in Etna, I can recommend both Bob's Ranch House restaurant and Dotty's restaurant. Had a couple good breakfasts and a dinner at Bob's and a great burger and milkshake at Dotty's. The Etna Motel was no frills, but nice and clean.

The hiking today was more up and down. There were a couple steep climbs, but overall nothing too tough.

We are still getting views of Mount Shasta, but today the air was a bit hazy from a fire in the vicinity. I guess it is about 50 miles away, so no real danger to us, just hazy views and a bit of smoke smell in the air.

At lunch we were next to a mountain meadow and I was surprised to hear cowbells, but there they were, a small herd of cows, just seven or eight, happily enjoying the grass in the meadow.

On the drive up to the trail we had seen a few cows grazing in the side of the road, also with bells. The ones in the meadow looked happier, no annoying cars to disturb them.

Managed almost 19 miles today, not bad for a bit of a late start this morning.

  1. So many burned trees in California! Very sad. However, I'm thrilled about the cow bells, finally, happy cows.
